The Indian government is progressing with the initiative to construct a new airport at Minicoy Island in Lakshadweep. The proposed airport would accommodate both military and civilian aircraft.
The proposal envisions a versatile airfield designed to accommodate fighter jets, various military aircraft, and commercial planes, as revealed by official sources speaking to India Today. Earlier submissions for the establishment of a new airfield on Minicoy Island had been made to the government. This resurrected proposal has been reintroduced to the authorities, emphasizing its dual-purpose nature for collaborative utilization.
India aims to enhance its monitoring capabilities in the Arabian Sea and the Indian Ocean by establishing a new airfield. This initiative, initially proposed by the Indian Coast Guard, marks a historic move as it becomes the first force under the Defence Ministry to suggest such a development. The plan envisions the Indian Air Force taking charge of operations from the proposed airfield situated on Minicoy Island.
The Minicoy airport, once operational, will enhance the defence forces’ surveillance capabilities in the Arabian Sea. Additionally, it will stimulate regional tourism, as outlined in the government’s plans.

At present, the island’s airspace is limited by a sole airstrip located in Agatti, constraining the range of compatible aircraft. This decision comes in the aftermath of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent trip to the area and the subsequent dispute with Maldives.
Additionally, by 2026, Tata Group aims to unveil a pair of innovative retreats situated on the Suheli and Kadmat islands within the Lakshadweep archipelago. The preceding January witnessed the disclosure from the Indian Hotels Company, an affiliate of Tata Group, officially confirming pacts for the inception of two Taj-affiliated resorts in Lakshadweep. IHCL is entrusted with overseeing the realization of these upcoming Greenfield initiatives, slated for opening in 2026.
